š What Is Printed On This Label
Every line of type on the sheet, transcribed from the label itself rather than paraphrased:
- VITAMIN
- BRAND
- YAMS
- SWEET POTATOES
- 50 LBS. NET
- PRODUCE OF U.S.A.
- U.S. No 1
- PACKED FOR
- FRIEDMAN & BROUSSARD
- LAFAYETTE, LA.
- & Co. Inc. N.O. LA.
Printer: a lithographer's imprint is physically present on this sheet, but it is set in microtype below what the photographs resolve. It is left unread rather than guessed at ā a flat re-scan of that corner would settle it.
Vitamin is the brand. The crate held sweet potatoes. A red oval with a green keyline sits dead centre of the sheet carrying YAMS in yellow above SWEET POTATOES in large white capitals. An outsized painted yam lies across the lower right, and there is a plate of cooked yams on the table in the vignette.
A printed grade and a printed weight. U.S. No 1 runs in yellow across a red diagonal corner band at the lower right; 50 LBS. NET is set in yellow at the left.
The artwork is a pun on the brand name. The bottle the mother is spoon-feeding from is itself lettered VITAMIN ā the joke being that the sweet potatoes in the crate are the vitamins. PACKED FOR / FRIEDMAN & BROUSSARD / LAFAYETTE, LA. is printed in the red bottom band: they are the house the crop was packed for, not the maker of the label.
A New Orleans printer. An imprint in yellow script runs along the bottom edge, partly overlapped by the painted yam. The tail reads & Co. Inc. N.O. LA. clearly ā a New Orleans lithographer ā but the firm name before it cannot be resolved and is not guessed at here.
